Despite being tied with "Milk" for the most Oscar nominations (and Heath Ledger's posthumous nomination for Best Supporting Actor), the second-most-successful movie of all-time, The Dark Knight, was NOT nominated for Best Picture or Best Director for Chris Nolan by the Academy. Apparently, comic book movies will NEVER be considered "serious entertainment." I'm not sure why this is the case, unless the Academy simply views comic book movies as "children's fare;" my response is, what is so childish about the murder of Harvey Dent's fiancee, his horrid scarring, and his subsequent psychosis?
Next you're gonna tell me that Adam West is the best Batman ever....

Milk and The Dark were tied as the 3rd most nominated pictures. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button had 13 nominations, while Slumdog Millionaire had 10.
I'm actually glad that The Dark Knight didn't get the nomination (though I've only seen one of the Best Picture nominees - Benjamin Button). I felt like the pacing was way off and could have done without about 30 minutes of the movie. It could have easily been made into two movies.
To me, WALL-E was more snubbed than The Dark Knight. There has only been one animated film nominated for Best Picture (Beauty & the Beast), but almost every Pixar movie after it (except maybe Ratatouille) was a better movie.
The Academy hates success. Unless there's a major critical outcry in favor of a successful film as was the case for Heath Ledger's performance, you won't see blockbusters nominated in the major categories like Best Picture.
The Academy also likes to make people wait for recognition. Lord Of The Rings didn't win big until the third film, for example, even though it was by far the most poorly edited of the three with forty-five endings tacked on that took three days to watch!
On the other hand, the Academy loves controversial low-budget films that never had a wide-release. This is why people who love movies that don't happen to live in major cities are so often frustrated by the nominations and the results. It's difficult to have an opinion on, say, _The Wrestler_, when the nearest it played was probably Atlanta or possibly Charlotte.
I do agree that Dark Knight was a little longer than necessary (I thought it was over when he put the Joker in jail) :-) However, it was a great movie and didn't really drag. In some ways the Two Face stuff could have waited and in other ways they didn't explore him as much, but it was cool that they got him in there if they weren't going to do anything else with him.
